Ararat Lodge is built on the property of Peter and Barbara McLaren. Peter hails from the Wairarapa
in New Zealand, has travelled the seven seas and has a doctorate in anthropology. If you fancy a conversation about the obscure
cultic rituals of the highland tribesmen of Papua New Guinea, then Peter is your man. Barbara McLaren has also traversed the
globe in her days, ranging far from her native England. Barbara met Peter teaching linguistics in London. The two of
them lived in New Guinea before settling in Australia. Barbara would be more than happy to engage in a conversation in pidgen
over a cup of tea.
Ararat Lodge is now operated by Peter and Barbara's daughter, Jane McLaren. Jane is a Colo
River native and her natural easy demeanour will make you feel immediately at home. Jane lives on the property with
Peter and Barbara, and tries to keep them out of trouble. During your stay you will probably meet Jane's boisterous and
beautiful daughter, Freya, who is capable of overwhelming you with her stream-of-consciousness conversational style.
Doubtless, you will also make the acquaintance of our four-legged eco-friendly garbage disposal unit, Harry. Harry is a
beagle who is more than willing to accomodate all of your waste-disposal needs. Harry is a true exponent of our non-discriminatory
policy - he will consume anything you may offer him, even rocks and grass. You will probably also meet an enormous
dog known as Zeus. Zeus is true to his name, a gigantic hefalump of a dog. Zeus is more focussed on spreading the love. Be
warned, he may smother you with affection. No need to be scared of him - he runs away from mice. There are cows and horses
and various other animals but they tend to stand around and not do too much.
